California vs. Texas: How Demand Structure Decides Your Category Entry

Most China-based manufacturers enter the US market with a national plan. That is the first mistake. The United States is not one building-products market — it is a set of regional markets with different demand structures, and each structure rewards a different category, a different channel and a different order-size strategy.
Over the past four years I have run North America market entry for kitchen and bath, glass systems and equipment categories. The pattern that keeps repeating: the state-level demand structure decides everything downstream — pricing bands, MOQ, channel type and even the sales team's weekly rhythm.
California: a renovation market of frequent small orders
California's housing stock is mature. New construction is constrained by land and regulation, so the dominant demand is renovation of existing homes. Kitchen and bath remodels happen continuously, driven by homeowners, small contractors and design studios.
- Order pattern: high frequency, small quantity, SKU-intensive
- Winning channel: wholesalers, showroom distributors and regional dealers
- Pricing logic: mid-to-high bands with fast replenishment; stock availability beats lowest price
Texas: a new-build market of infrequent large orders
Texas grows outward. Suburban new construction feeds demand for doors, windows and full building-envelope packages, usually specified by builders and developers at the project level.
In California you win by being on the shelf. In Texas you win by being in the specification.
What this means for your entry plan
Map your category to the demand structure first, then design the channel. A shower-room supplier that runs a Texas builder strategy in California will drown in small-order logistics; a window supplier that runs a California wholesaler strategy in Texas will miss every project cycle.
The practical sequence: pick one region, verify the demand structure with ten field visits, grade the customers you meet, and only then set pricing bands and MOQ policy. Nine months of disciplined sequencing is how 200+ active B2B buyers were built in the last retail program — not by blanket national coverage.
